Sports/Orthopedic Physical Therapy

Physical therapists who specialize in orthopedics evaluate, manage, and treat musculoskeletal injuries and disorders. Orthopedic physical therapists are well-versed in treating sprains, strains, back and neck pain, spinal conditions, post-operative orthopedic procedures, fractures, acute sports injuries, and arthritic conditions. Physical therapists are trained in the use of many therapeutic modalities aimed at expediting the recovery and healing process. These modalities can include joint and spine mobilization, soft tissue mobilization, therapeutic exercise, neuromuscular reeducation, ultrasound, hot/cold packs, and electrical muscle stimulation. Individuals who suffer from injury or disease affecting the muscles, tendons, ligaments, or bones of the body will benefit from assessment by a physical therapist specialized in orthopedics.

At Functional Health and Wellness, we integrate a form of soft-tissue mobilization called SASTM (sound assisted soft tissue mobilization) into our therapy program, which allows for the identification and treatment of soft-tissue restrictions (scaring, calcifications, adhesions). This method has been thoroughly researched and clinically tested for its effectiveness in eliminating restrictions that cause pain, decreased flexibility/range of motion, muscle imbalances, and improper body mechanics. Furthermore, with the use of SASTM as part of our rehabilitation protocol, we have found that our patients can expect to perform daily functional tasks, and sports-related activities better than they did before their injury.

We also offer SASTM to clients on a cash-basis. Athletes and active individuals benefit greatly from SASTM treatments as a way to counteract the negative effects of past injuries where scar tissue and calcifications have built up in muscles, fasciae, tendons, and ligaments. This is also a great preventive treatment as it can significantly improve flexibility, joint range-of-motion, and overall body mechanics. All of this adds up to increased performance and decreased injuries long-term!

Occupational Rehabilitation
Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE)

Using state-of-the-art computer interfaced testing equipment and fully integrated software, we offer a FCE that is accurate, objective, and thorough. A FCE is typically 4-hours in length and is performed one-on-one, between the physical therapist and the client. The completed test will help determine a client's maximal functional job capabilities. These results are then compared to actual work requirements obtained from a job description. Testing includes: Patient history, functional surveys, computerized strength and range-of-motion testing, orthopedic testing, functional strength/endurance testing, and computerized cardiovascular efficiency testing. We then compile all the results in a concise, easy to read format complete with all objective measures, survey results, and recommendations.

Return to Work Program (work hardening/work conditioning)

Functional Health and Wellness offers an individualized exercise-based rehabilitation program that is designed to help clients achieve maximal improvements in work and physical capacity in an efficient time span. Clients are often prescribed a treatment frequency of 5 days per week for 2-4 hours, which facilitates patients' quick realization of considerable functional gains. We utilize state-of-the-art computer-interfaced equipment for objective testing results, which give us the ability to demonstrate measurable functional gains over time. Unique to our clinic, we offer the Med-X medical lumbar rehabilitation unit as well as the Hanoun Multi-Cervical Unit for both testing and treatment purposes. These two pieces of equipment are invaluable for both acquiring baseline strength measures and treating strength and endurance deficits in these key regions of the body.

Fitness Training/Sports Performance

Much like our 'Independently Healthy' program, we offer fitness training and sports performance training for clients that haven't necessarily been patients, but would like to take their fitness to the next level. Our physical therapist will consult with you to create a customized program tailored to your needs and specific to your goals. Your program will be overseen and directed by a physical therapist who will consult with you weekly to discuss progress and modify your program. A fitness specialist who will see to it that you stay motivated and perform all exercises safely will directly supervise each one-hour session.
